Xtra-Cote Liquid Protectant

What Is Xtra-Cote?

Xtra-Cote is a unique product in the fight against corrosion.  It is a sealer which penetrates and adheres to the base metal profile.

Xtra-Cote can be used as a protective barrier against oxygen, moisture and corrosion accelerators such as salts and acid. Xtra-Cote is also an ideal product to apply to existing rust - air and moisture are repelled and continued rusting is stopped or greatly retarded.

Xtra-Cote Applications

Xtra-Cote can be used to protect or restore damaged metal surfaces such as:

  • Vehicle chassis & underbody surfaces
  • Vehicle bodies – both external and internal
  • Engine bays
  • Cadmium plated bolts and fittings
  • Stone chips
  • Boat trailers
  • Earthmoving & Mining Machinery
  • Aluminium components – Engine block, gearbox housing, radiators, oil coolers, AC condensers
  • Agricultural Equipment
  • Air-conditioning units
  • Wherever rust and corrosion is a problem

Using Xtra-Cote

Preparation before use:

All surfaces to be coated should be dry and free of all foreign matter. For rust damaged metal, remove rust knots with a sharp tool, steel wool or by hand sanding and then apply Xtra-Cote. On rusted through, hard-to-get-to areas, moisture can remain internally. These areas should be dried with an air gun and/or methylated spirits. A liberal coat of Xtra-Cote will penetrate all loose rust in the pocketed areas and force out the remaining moisture and provide protection against further rusting.

Methods of application:

Application can be by aerosol can, brush, roller or conventional spray gun. To successfully treat rusty surfaces with Xtra-Cote you must use the wet on wet method ie apply one coat, allow this to dry until it is still slightly tacky then apply a second coat. Always use appropriate protective clothing and equipment.

Whilst Xtra-Cote is UV resistant if it is to be exposed to strong ultra violet radiation for long periods it should be overcoated with a compatible, UV resistant coating.

Depending on temperature and humidity, Xtra-Cote will be touch dry in 1-2 hours and completely dry in 6-24 hours. Wash out brushes with white spirits after use.

Warning: If you choose to apply any top coat it is recommended to wait 7 days for the Xtra-Cote to completely cure. However, if you choose to apply a top coat of paints containing strong solvents such as toluene or xylene or 2 pack products, and you cannot wait 7 days for the Xtra-Cote to completely cure, it is recommended to use a barrier coat of a zinc phosphate primer between the Xtra-Cote and top coat otherwise the top coat may cause bubbling of the Xtra-Cote coating.

Underbody:

The underbody should be thoroughly cleaned for the removal of all dirt, oils, salts, etc. Water blasting or steam cleaning is preferable. Allow to dry. Apply Xtra-Cote to the dry surface to penetrate and seal. Apply sufficient coats to achieve a gloss finish.

If you are going to subject your vehicle to very extreme conditions that may cause severe wear to the underbody you may wish to opt for an extra heavy duty coating or paint a coat of Liquid Rubber over the top of the Xtra-Cote on the underbody area – but not the brake discs or exhaust. This will provide a tough, flexible coating which will give additional protection against stone chips and sand blasting.

Stone chips:

Clean area thoroughly and then apply Xtra-Cote with a cotton bud.

Boat Trailers:

Depending on the size, cost and use of your boat trailer it may not always be financially viable to fit an electronic system. If not using electronic rust prevention, Xtra-Cote is the next best protection available. If the trailer is galvanised and less than six months old you will need to etch wash (using an acid wash or strong vinegar solution) the galvanised sections or the Xtra-Cote may not stick. If practical remove all nuts, bolts and screws and dip into Xtra-Cote and replace while wet. Remove wheels and thoroughly spray hubs, brake components (not braking surfaces), wheel rims and nuts. Apply several coats.

Storage:

Always store in airtight containers. The containers and places of storage should comply with local regulations. Xtra-Cote is a flammable liquid and should be stored and handled accordingly. It should be stored at as constant a temperature as possible. Ideally this would be in the range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.
