Looking after and maintaining your vehicle isn’t always exciting. Actually, most of the time it’s straight up boring! However, if you care about your vehicle’s longevity or making it back from your next trip, it’s important to think about all necessary procedures both before and after the getaway.

To help you on your next adventure, we’ve compiled a super simple and practical 7-step guide to help maintain your 4WD and keep it in top shape!



Maintaining and servicing your 4×4 can be a costly process; especially if you’re going off-road. Other issues to watch out for : heavy towing, badly fitted/poor quality parts breaking or malfunctioning, rough driving conditions (such as unsteady ground, river crossings, corrugated roads, sand or mud) and intense weather.

Protecting the Aussie dream – Creek to Coast



If you’re a fan of this show (Creek to Coast), chances are you’ve thought about loading up the van, hitching it up to the car and taking off around the country. It’s the great Australian dream. Now plenty of people talk about doing it, not that many people actually get around to doing it. We’re about to meet a man who’s put his money where his mouth is.



Paul Gibson is definitely what you’d call a silver lining kind of bloke. Even in a summer downpour, he’s still got a smile on his face. And why wouldn’t he! Travelling the country with the 5th-wheeler hitched up, and his wife Sandy by his side – it’s a setup and lifestyle that plenty of people would envy.



Paul and Sandy are making the most of retirement and have the pics to prove it. They’ve spent the majority of the last 6 years on the road, and aren’t showing any signs of settling down anytime soon. I was just having a look at some of these photos and I saw the rig, fully complete. You’ve got the tinny on the top of the truck…

For people contemplating that wandering lifestyle, what would you say to them?


‘Um, what would I say – I would say…that there’s a goal to look forward to and don’t leave it too late! I should’ve retired 5 years earlier.



For Paul, it’s a well earned reward for 35 years working as a pro fisherman on the Gold Coast. I was looking at some of this vision before, this is you catching fish on the beach is it? ‘Yeah that’s correct’


It’s a job that’s the very definition of tough on the gear. In fact, he reckons you’d only get about 2 years out of a truck, before it was time to trade it in for a new one…that was before he was introduced to a thing called ERPS – Electronic Rust Prevention System.


Previous to putting electronic rust prevention in my vehicles, when we’d take the vehicles to trade them in, the dealership wouldn’t want to know us.


 They’d say, if you took it to a farm you might get $2000 for it, if you’re lucky ! But since I was introduced to this electronic rust prevention, the first 2 1/2 years we had the vehicle, I took it in and the guy says


“Aw jeez, it’s not a bad looking vehicle – I might have to give you about $20-22,000”


– I nearly fell off the chair!’

After 20 years of field testing, he’s now a convert. In fact, he’s got an ERPS installed on both of their Land Cruisers. Sandy’s 100 Series and the tow-car, Paul’s custom dual-axle Cruiser Ute. It’s quite a technical system, even Paul admits he doesn’t really know how it works. But he’s seen firsthand the difference it makes – and that’s enough for him. Beach Driving with Channel 7’s, Andrew Mirosch (Creek to Coast)


Driving on the beach is one of the few off-road challenges suitable for just about any SUV or 4×4. Beach driving is fantastic fun, but be aware, there are a few dangers lurking…



It can be hard avoiding salt water, it rises up from the sand as you drive, sea spray can cover your car and if you’re driving into the sea, well, you are doing something wrong!


Water + Salt + Sand = Rust

Rust is iron oxide – it’s the product of an electro-chemical reaction known as corrosion.

So what is ERPS?

‘This little generator here is the heart and soul of our Electronic Rust Prevention System. It’s a system that is designed to put a charge through and protect the vehicle from rust. That’s your insurance policy – protecting your vehicle.

Obviously here in Australia we’re absolutely spoilt for choice with the locations we can go to; the beach lifestyle. There’s consequences of that obviously, when you’re on the beach, you’ve got salt and you got moisture, water – and that’s always looking to attack your car’

But you’ve still got to care for the car, you’ve got to wash it down and do all the usual things we do when we come off the beach as well?

‘Absolutely, all the normal maintenance – wash your car thoroughly with good clean water and get the salt and the sand out of it as much as you can…but obviously you can never get it 100% right’


But you also do other things? It’s not all about cars is it?

‘No, we’ve strangely enough done everything from grand pianos to 400 tonne crawler cranes, mining equipment, even locker systems at water parks’



Well this is it, isn’t it – the great Aussie dream!

‘Yes, living the dream! We’re out and about enjoying it and this is the lifestyle we’re trying to protect. About 98% of our product is built in-house. We do right from the design, through to testing and the manufacturing in our own facility’


So these were designed by us, they’re actually completely injected with silicon to seal it 100% and keeps all the moisture out. We do the same thing with our coupler pads, which is where the electrical charge is transferred to the body of the car. Again, they’re put in the press in the factory and injected with silicon.

With all of these components we use marine grade wiring because it stands up to the salt conditions better.



Even the fuses, because we design it ourselves, we’ve designed a small LED light into the end of the fuse which means if the fuse blows the light comes on. It’s a simple thing, but it makes a difference.



This is the heart and soul of our system. It transfers the charge to what we call the coupler pads and puts the charge into the body of the vehicle. There’s several things we need to get right with this: low battery draw, high voltage output, but no interference to the vehicle or the people in it.



What a fantastic day on the beach. You bought the snacks, I’m going to supply the fish and chips – and of course, extra salt!

Tips to tackle river crossings, with Roger Vickery


No matter what the weather forecast says, it’s important to make your 4×4 waterproof. Expose your vehicle to river crossings, beach driving or acid rain – you’re going to give rust a chance to get a toe-hold. The best protection you can give your vehicle before attempting a water crossing is to actually walk through it before the vehicle. That way, you know how deep it is and what’s on the bottom.



No matter how much mud and water you intend on exposing your vehicle to, it’s a great idea to get an ERPS – an Electronic Rust Prevention System. It guarantees to make the car safe from rust, and keeping it in prime condition for years to come.
