Beach runs, river crossings, salted coastal roads and corrugations all chew through a 4WD faster than almost any other vehicle. So what’s the best rust protection for a 4WD?
After 30 years protecting 4WDs since 1996, our honest answer is that it depends on how you use your vehicle. Here’s how the main options compare.
The 3 main types of 4WD rust protection
| Electronic rust protection | Underbody spray (lanolin / wax) | Rubberised / bitumen coating | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protects | Whole body, including hidden cavities | Where it’s sprayed | Where it’s applied |
| Lasts | Ongoing, nothing to wear off | Usually re-applied yearly | Long-lasting, but can crack and trap moisture |
| Maintenance | None (check the LED) | Re-spray, plus touch-ups after beach trips | Inspect for chips and cracks |
| Mess | None | Oily, can attract dirt | None once cured |
| Move to your next 4WD | ✔ | ✘ | ✘ |
| DIY | ✔ Fit it yourself in a weekend | ✔ Messy | Usually workshop applied |
1. Electronic rust protection for 4WD
An electronic rust protection system like ERPS connects to your battery and sends a small negative charge through the body using capacitive coupler pads. The charge slows the chemical reaction that causes rust, across the whole vehicle, including the places a spray gun can’t reach.
Best for: 4WDs you plan to keep, coastal and beach driving, and owners who don’t want ongoing maintenance.
- 10-year product warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee
- Draws under 20mA, so it won’t flatten your battery
- Passed AS 4251.1, so it won’t interfere with your UHF, radio or vehicle electronics
- Moves to your next 4WD with a Re-Installation Kit

2. Underbody rust sprays
Lanolin and wax-based underbody rust protection sprays coat the chassis and underside. They work well on exposed steel, but they only protect where they’re applied and wash off over time, especially after sand and salt water.
Best for: a chassis that’s already exposed, or as an extra layer alongside electronic protection.
3. Rubberised and bitumen undercoatings
These are hard coatings applied underneath the vehicle. They’re good against stone chips, but if they crack, moisture can get trapped against the steel underneath.
Best for: stone-chip protection on gravel roads.
So what’s the best 4WD rust proofing?
For most 4WD owners, the best rust proofing for a 4WD is electronic protection for the whole body, plus a spray underneath if you do a lot of beach driving. Electronic protection covers the cavities, seams and panels you can’t see, and the spray adds a physical barrier on the chassis.

What 4WD owners say
For us it’s like a godsend, you have saved us thousands of $$$ every year. So you know for a very small outlay, really, compared to what you get at the end, the end result is just amazing.
Peter R, Commercial Fisherman
We are in one of the harshest environments on the planet and with the amount of salt water that those trucks get through them – it’s just unbelievable. Anyone that buys a vehicle living on the coast, around the estuaries or anything like that – they’d be silly if they didn’t invest in these.

4WD rust protection FAQs
Does beach driving void the warranty?
No. Beach driving doesn’t void your ERPS warranty. Salt and sand are exactly what the system is built for, and your 10-year product warranty still applies.
Can I fit it to a 4WD that already has rust?
Yes. Fit the system first and wait 4–6 weeks before repairs, because it can bring hidden rust to the surface so you only fix it once.
Can I use an underbody spray as well?
Yes, and many owners do. Electronic protection covers the whole body, and the spray adds a physical barrier on the chassis.
Will it protect my ute’s tub or canopy?
Yes, if it’s steel. For a steel tub or canopy, we recommend fitting two ERPS pads directly to it as part of your install. If you’re using an installer, let them know you want these areas included so they can plan the pad placement. Aluminium and fibreglass tubs and canopies don’t rust, so they don’t need pads.
